“AWMA sought a partner in steel product manufacturing and had previously collaborated with LEED on other projects.
LEED’s proactive approach and in-house manufacturing capabilities made them the ideal choice for this project.”

Leigh Scoular
General Manager, AWMA

The Trangie-Nevertire Irrigation Scheme (TNIS) screening project is currently Australia’s largest showcase of modern pump screening designed for fish protection (fishscreens.org.au). AWMA, a specialist in water management solutions, successfully delivered innovative screening solutions for the TNIS Pump Station upgrade project, located on the Macquarie River. Project partners included NSW Department of Industry and Environment (EES), Department of Regional NSW (Fisheries), Trangie-Nevertire Irrigation Scheme, Recreational Fishing Trust and OzFish Unlimited. LEED were engaged by AWMA as the steelwork supplier.

The AWMA screening solution eliminates fish and debris entrainment whilst guaranteeing reliable irrigation flows to 33 regional farms. This pump site was one of many nominated under the NSW Government’s Regional Recovery Program, upgraded to adhere to new fish protection guidelines.

Solution
LEED played a key role in the success of the Macquarie river pump station upgrades, by supplying precision steel elements, that addressed critical challenges. LEED successfully delivered custom structures including modular steel-reinforced troughs with enclosed lids, to a total project length of 50 metres and a weight of 20 tonnes. LEED’s expertise facilitated a specialised coating process that met the customer’s stringent protection requirements. This involved blasting and multi-coat paint finishes to ensure the durability and effectiveness of the components.

Customer benefits
With LEED’s support, AWMA was able to streamline manufacturing processes, ensuring superior precision in product creation. This collaboration resulted in improved in-house efficiencies and increased product quality.

Environmental benefits
The Exclusion Screens have successfully championed environmental sustainability, for all river pump stations Australia-wide. DPI Fisheries estimates an annual saving of over 2 million native fish, resulting in a fish-friendly screening of 35% of the water extracted from the Macquarie River, as well as high-quality water delivery with less maintenance costs for operators.

The collaboration between AWMA and LEED demonstrates the power of collaborative efforts to solve complex challenges. LEED significantly contributed to the success of AWMA’s Fish and Debris Screening Solution through the provision of precision steel solutions. This project highlights the advantages of collaborative innovation in sustainable water management, that’s available right here in Victoria.
